Many magicians perform for corporations, bars, trade shows and comedy clubs, spending more performance time with adults than with children. Abby is different. For over a decade (since 1997) she has specialized exclusively in shows for children and parents, and it shows in her ability to delight, captivate and manage such audiences. She has worked the range of children's venues
Abby the magician has worked professionally entertaining children and parents at schools, libraries, country clubs, the Philadelphia Zoo, the Philadelphia Art Museum, Penn's Peak, corporate picnics, malls, wedding receptions, church picnics, first communion parties, department stores, anniversary parties, restaurants, movie theaters, reunions, parades and a circus. She has worked in all kinds of children's entertainment settings.
Birthday parties are her favorite
She likes birthday parties because they lend themselves to sentimental routines alongside awe-inspiring and comical ones. They are a great place to elicit not just "wows" and giggles, but also poignant "awwwws." Birthday party prices are fixed and all-inclusive. Abby is one of the more educated Philadelphia magicians
Abby has spent a decade developing shows only for kids and their parents. She has taken five semester-long courses to develop material: a full magician's course, two college-level stand-up comedy courses, and two clown courses. She has training in stage magic and parlor magic through the generous contributions of her mentors at International Brotherhood of Magicians Ring 6 and the Magician's Alliance of the Eastern States. Every year she extends her education with regular study at conferences, such as the Kidabra Conference of Kid Show Entertainers and the Twist and Shout Convention for balloon twisters. She has lots of other education too, including a master's degree from the Johns Hopkins University in Social Psychology. Knowledge of this field proves helpful for shaping audience behavior at parties. To read testimonials from previous customers, click here.
Avoid disappointment. Book early.
Abby gets pretty booked up. Customers planning ahead by the usual couple of weeks usually miss out. You may maximize your chances of booking Abby by calling as far in advance as you can, ideally before setting your party date. To find an open date on Abby's Schedule, click here.
Finish the fun with facepaints or balloon party favors (included) and decorations
Abby offers custom face paintings or balloon sculptures for the children after the magic show at no additional charge as part of the regular birthday party package. If there will be more children than can be covered in that time, you may order balloons pre-made as well. That saves the children from waiting in line for a balloon. You can even sign up to have a five-foot tall sculpture of a princess or of your daughter. Abby made the balloon sculpture on the left to match the outfit of the pretty first-communion celebrant in the picture. Click here for more about the balloons.
Ask about customized shows
Abby has tailored shows on a case-by-case basis for theme parties, including Harry Potter parties, Yu-Gi-Oh parties, a pink-and-purple party, a rock-and-roll party, a Cars (the movie) party, and even a frog party. Ask Abby about tailoring a show to your child's party theme. She has the know how to adapt magical principles to your theme.
Practicalities: All parties are indoors, in Pennsylvania only
Abby the Magician performs only in Pennsylvania in the suburbs of Philadelphia. All performances are indoors. If your party is planned for a pavilion, park, deck, garage, front lawn or other outdoor area, Abby will refer you to a magician or a clown who works outdoors. Or book Abby and have the party in your house, a local fire hall, a community center, a clubhouse or a meeting room like those at Henning's Market, Harleysville.
Stories from Abby about working as a magician in Pennsylvania
An accomplishment that makes me proud? Once, the mom stopped the magic show to tell me that there were twins outside who are shy and really scared to see a magician despite being pressured to come in. (Probably someone had said the magician might vanish you or cut you in half). So I went outside, knelt down, introduced myself, and said that if they were most comfortable staying outside, that was okay. And if they changed their minds and wanted to join the fun inside, they could do that too. I pointed out that nobody gets scared and they'll see no fires, nothing sharp and no ouchy-looking things of any kind. I'm the only one who gets scared in the show. I said no matter what you decide, I'm pleased to meet you, and then I returned to finish the show. The twins came inside, giggled the whole time, and one of them even participated as an assistant.
Another funny thing? After I vanish a puppet the children become concerned about its welfare in case he's someplace that he can't breathe. Isn't that sweet? To them the monkey is a real live animal, and after I vanish him they will stop the show to ask if he's okay. So now after vanishing him I magically re-appear him right away so that the little ones won't worry that he's smushed or suffocating somewhere.
At one of my holiday magic shows, Santa was scheduled to perform after me. After my show during the balloon sculpting, one of the children asked where Santa was. I said he was on his way, and it's a long trip from the north pole so maybe he's working his way through the traffic. A four-year old girl a little further down in line said "Oh no, he's here. He's my grandpa and his name is Frank."
Then there was the magic show in Philadelphia where the birthday boy turned around and yelled with delight "How did YOU get here?" His favorite friend had shown up unexpectedly and was sitting right behind him. Some sharp grownup in the audience asked if I had made the best friend appear out of nowhere. So I shrugged and said "Sure, okay. Why not. Does that mean I get a big tip?" These are the funny things that happen on a day-to-day basis during the shows.
